Are You Listening To Your Body?

Health is interesting because most people don’t ignore it on purpose.
We know movement matters.
We know sleep matters.
We know stress affects us.
We know food is fuel.
And yet, life gets busy. We get tired. We fall into survival mode. Convenience starts winning over intention. Before we know it, we’re disconnected from the very body carrying us through life.
I’ve had seasons where I’ve cared for my health well… and seasons where I absolutely have not.
That’s the truth for most humans.
The hard part about health is that healthy choices don’t always feel easy in the beginning. Especially when your body and mind have adapted to stress, chaos, exhaustion, processed foods, overworking, or emotional suppression.
Your body gets used to what you repeatedly give it.
That’s why intentionality matters.
Not perfection.
Not punishment.
Not obsession.
Intentionality.
Health is learning to listen again.
It’s noticing your body wants movement, not because you “have to work out,” but because your nervous system needs release. Sometimes that movement is a walk outside. Sometimes it’s lifting weights. Sometimes it’s stretching on the floor while music plays in the background.
It’s feeding your body foods that actually make you feel alive instead of sluggish.
It’s drinking water.
Getting sunlight.
Sleeping enough.
Breathing deeper.
Resting before your body forces you to.
And honestly? It’s also emotional.
We are energetic beings, whether people like that wording or not. Emotions that stay trapped in the body have a way of showing up somewhere eventually. Stress changes the body. Chronic anger affects the body. Anxiety affects the body. Constant overwhelm affects the body.
Even the way we think affects our health.
Science backs this up. Your thoughts influence stress hormones, nervous system regulation, inflammation levels, and behavior patterns. If your internal dialogue is constantly critical, fearful, rushed, or hopeless, your body feels that too.
That doesn’t mean we “positive think” our way out of illness. Life is more complicated than that.
Disease processes are real. Genetics is real. Aging is real.
But even in those seasons, we still have choices.
Choices about how we support ourselves.
Choices about what we consume mentally and physically.
Choices about rest, movement, community, stress, mindset, and care.
Choices about whether we work with our body or stay disconnected from it.
Health isn’t about becoming someone else.
It’s about becoming more aware of yourself.
What energizes you?
What drains you?
What foods make you feel good?
What environments calm your nervous system?
What relationships leave your body tense?
What habits are helping your future self… and which ones are stealing from it?
Those questions matter.
And the beautiful thing is this:
We are all different.
What works for one person may not work for another. One person may heal through running, while another heals through yoga and quiet walks. One person thrives with structure while another needs flexibility and softness.
There’s no single perfect formula for health.
But there is wisdom in learning your body instead of fighting it.
And if improving your health has been sitting quietly in the back of your mind lately, I’m grateful to have friends like Janice and Traci in my life. They’re two of my retreat co-facilitators and women I personally learn from often. They’re always happy to share what’s helped them create healthier, more intentional lifestyles in ways that feel realistic and sustainable.
Maybe the better question isn’t, “How do I completely change my life?”
Maybe it’s:
What is one way my body has been asking for care… that I’m finally ready to listen to?

P.S. Lasting change rarely comes from doing everything at once. It comes from one intentional choice, practiced consistently.
