When You Lead With Your Heart, Profit Follows

The last week of January, I was in Las Vegas at a leadership summit with almost 1,000 people in the room. It’s technically a sales summit, but this year felt different — in the best way.
I noticed it in the simplest thing: the smiles. People looked lighter. Their energy felt calmer. More open. Less “push harder.” More “this actually feels right.”
And it reminded me why I wrote Rethink Everything You Know About Business Planning. Because yes, numbers matter. They matter a lot. But they’re not the only thing that matters.
If your business is built on values — and you stay aligned with the decisions you make (who you do business with, how you do business, when you do business, and where you do business) — then the purpose behind what you’re doing starts to feel right. And when it feels right, you stop forcing everything.
Here’s the line I want people to remember:
Lead with your heart, and the profit part works itself out.
Not because you ignore the numbers — but because when your heart is involved, you make cleaner decisions. You build real trust. You stop chasing what’s not aligned. You show up with more consistency because you’re not dragging yourself through work you secretly resent. There’s an ease that shows up when you’re serving people in a way that matches your values.
I’m proud of Guild Mortgage Company for embracing a value-driven business in a way that isn’t just words on paper. It’s something you can feel — and last week, you could witness it. In a room of almost 1,000 people, the energy was lighter, the smiles were real, and the conversations felt more connected.
Now here’s my challenge for you:
What would change if you made the same shift?
If you stopped building your business around pressure — and started building it around purpose?
If your values became a real filter instead of a nice idea?
If you decided that alignment matters as much as income?
How differently would you feel about going to work tomorrow?
Dream it. Believe it. Become it.
And build it in a way that feels good to live inside.
